Chapter Thirteen
The last time Luka was at an airport was when his adoptive parents had taken him back to England with them. All of his memories of Poland were inside that children’s home and the small concrete play area outside. He remembered that he had understood the words the people around him spoke then, even though he himself rarely spoke, but now in his memories they had talked to him in English. It was strange how the mind worked.
The airport was a bustling hive of activity. Swarms of people all moving in different directions, eager to get to where they wanted to go. He hoped that when they went through security the guards wouldn’t see the tube of lubricant that Sam had given him some time ago. It had been something he did on impulse while packing his bag that morning. As he had put his boxer shorts and socks in his bag he saw the tube. It had been there for over a month and Luka had been embarrassed at the thought of it so he had hidden it under his underwear, hoping that Adam wouldn’t go looking through it. After what they had done the night before, Luka had hesitated for only a moment before grabbing it and packing it.
“Okay?” Adam asked as he reached down and squeezed his hand. They had packed light, only one suitcase between them and a carryon bag each.
Luka nodded. He wasn’t used to crowds, in fact the only people he was ever surrounded by were his pack. He started thinking that it would have been a better idea to ask Sam to go with them.
“Luka,” Adam began, making Luka turn and look at him. “Don’t be nervous. We’ll go check in, find somewhere to eat while we wait, and then we’ll be boarding the plane in no time.”
“Yeah, it’s the boarding-the-plane bit that worries me,” Luka confessed.
“You’re afraid of flying?” Adam asked as he hoisted his large bag higher up his shoulder. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know,” Luka insisted. “I might be fine, but I started thinking that I might feel trapped or something on the plane and then I started panicking that I might panic.”
Adam smiled at him sympathetically and gave his hand another squeeze.
“You’ll be fine,” he assured him. The funny thing was that whenever Adam said something like that to him, unlike with everyone else who he thought was just trying to placate him, Luka actually believed Adam. “You’re anxious over seeing your old home and finding out what the P.I has to say. It’s bleeding through and presenting as transferred anxiety.”
Luka couldn’t help but smile when Adam talked therapist to him. “So I’m only scared of the plane because of where it’s taking me?”
Adam nodded before kissing the side of his head. “Exactly.”
Luka took a deep breath and released it, already feeling better. “Okay, let’s go check in then.”
